Swiss Trachten: Alpine Folk Dress Guide

Swiss Trachten Overview
Trachten is the German-language term for traditional folk dress in Switzerland. Each canton has its own distinctive style, reflecting local history, occupation, and religious affiliation.
Cantonal Variations
Bernese Trachten features black velvet bodices with silver chains. Appenzell styles include elaborate silver filigree headpieces. Valais costumes show French influence with lighter fabrics and brighter colors.
Men Trachten
Men traditional dress includes leather breeches (Lederhosen), embroidered suspenders, and felt hats with feather decorations. Alpine horn players and yodelers wear specific variations.
Living Tradition
Unlike many European folk costumes that became museum pieces, Swiss Trachten remain part of active cultural life. The Federal Trachten Association has over 20,000 members who wear authentic costumes at festivals.
Festivals and Occasions
Trachten appears at the Unspunnen Festival (every 12 years), cantonal shooting festivals, Alpine herdsmen festivals, and local church celebrations. Each event has specific dress requirements.
